It's not uncommon for celebrities to struggle on their way to the top. Many Hollywood hopefuls wait tables or bartend to make ends meet, while others have been known to take a different approach to living modestly. A surprising number of celebrities have lived out of their cars at some point in their career to save money and get where they needed to go.   1. William Shatner

    William Shatner has had a fruitful acting career, but the iconic Star Trek character hasn't always had it so easy. In 1969, Shatner and his first wife Gloria Rand divorced and Star Trek came to an end. He had trouble finding work and was forced to live in a truck bed camper until he received higher-paying jobs to support his family.

    Folk singer Jewel may not need an introduction today, but this songbird's success didn't come without many struggles. At the age of 18, Jewel was homeless and living out of her car in San Diego. Jewel also lived in a van and traveled around the country doing small performances to gain recognition.

    Funnyman Jim Carrey's journey toward stardom didn't come easily. When Carrey was a teenager, the family was forced to leave their Ontario town and move to a Toronto suburb. The whole Carrey family took janitorial jobs and lived out of a Volkswagen camper van to make ends meet.

The sacrifice paid off when Carey got to perform a stand-up routine on the show and was even invited over to the couch next to Carson's desk.
