8 Most Coveted Cars By Thieves

One of the worst feelings in the world is finding an empty space where you parked your car. If you own a Honda, your chances of getting your car stolen have already gone up significantly. For the first time since 2002, car thieves prefer domestic makes over foreign brands. Using data from the National Crime Information Center, these eight vehicles have been identified as the most stolen vehicles in the United States.

  1. Toyota Camry

It's not surprising that the best-selling passenger car in America also has one of the highest rates of theft. In fact, for every 1,000 Camrys that were produced in 2009, about 3.58 were reported stolen.

  2. Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is so popular among car thieves because of the engine, which is easily swappable. Also, the Accord has been a favorite among street racers and car remodeling enthusiasts for some time, so even their parts have a high reselling value. Of all the cars that were stolen, just 57% of all Honda Accords were recovered after being stolen.

  3. Honda Civic

Old models of the Honda Civic (1990s) continue to be one of the most coveted cars by thieves. It seems that improved anti-theft technology is deterring the theft of newer models, but the 1995 Honda Civic continues to the top pick among thieves. The best thing Civic owners can do is what insurance companies call a "four layer method" – employing common sense, a warning device, an immobilizing device, and a tracking device to protect their car.

  4. Chevrolet Silverado

Pickup trucks with an open truck bed filled with valuables are often targeted, even when the rest of the truck is left alone. Car thieves also find the Silverado so enticing to steal because manufacturers have been slow to put in extra security features on many new trucks.

  5. Ford F-150

In the most recent NICB (National Insurance Crime Board) report, the 1997 Ford F-150 was the highest listed pickup truck as well as the most stolen domestic-branded vehicle. A recent trend that has emerged in Houston, San Antonio, and Brownsville from 2006 to 2007 is alleged truck thefts to cartels, which stole heavy duty Ford F-150's to smuggle drugs and immigrants across the border.

  6. Acura Integra

The 1999 Acura Integra coupe remains one of the most popular stolen vehicles in America. For good reason, street racers want to replace their engines, and the Integra's fast and most accessible engine makes it a prime target for theft.

  7. Ford Explorer

Listed as the fifth most popular automobile among thieves by MSNBC, the Ford Explorer is a common sight in Nebraska, North Carolina, and Texas. The tires and wheels on the Ford Explorer are the most coveted parts on these vehicles, as SUV tires are expensive to replace.

  8. Toyota Corolla

The newest car on the list of top stolen cars is the 2009 Toyota Corolla, which is coveted for its versatile standard parts.
